NMC Entry Requirements for V300 Prescribing Programme

Professional Registration:

Post-Registration Experience:

Must be a registered nurse, midwife, or specialist community public health nurse with the NMC.

  • The NMC no longer sets a fixed minimum number of years on the register (previously 3 years for V300).
  • Instead, readiness is assessed based on clinical experience, competence, and professional development.

Demonstrated Competence:

  • Must show evidence of clinical competence in the area of practice where prescribing will occur.
  • This includes diagnostic and assessment skills relevant to the intended scope of prescribing.

When assessing aesthetic nurses for entry into the V300 Independent Prescribing course, UK universities generally align with NMC standards but also apply their own academic and clinical criteria. Clinical experience in the area of intended prescribing (e.g., aesthetics) is essential. Some universities expect a minimum of 3 years post-registration experience, and or a level 7 qualification especially if aesthetics is the primary field. Some universities may scrutinize aesthetic practice more closely due to its non-NHS setting, requiring extra clarity on governance and patient pathways.

Support from Employer:

Academic Capability:

Must have support from their employer, including access to a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) who will supervise the 90 hours of practice-based learning.

Must be capable of studying at Level 7 (Master’s level), often demonstrated by prior academic qualifications (e.g., PGCert, PGDip, or MSc).

Scope of Practice Alignment:

Other Requirements:

The prescribing role must align with the nurse’s current clinical role and be supported by their employer and clinical governance structures.

Professional Indemnity Insurance:

  • Must have appropriate indemnity arrangements in place for prescribing practice.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Clearance:

  • A current DBS check is typically required as part of the application process.
